How big does a vehicle have to be for the rules to apply?

You add the GVWR for each vehicle component, truck & trailer to see if the combined GVWR is over 10,000#. It is important to note that the GVWR, which stands for the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is NOT the weight of the truck or the truck and the trailer. The GVWR is the weight of the vehicle (truck or truck and trailer) plus the maximum weight of everything that vehicle can carry such as fuel, cargo, and passengers.

Here are some examples:

     1.  A Ford F150 Pickup with 8’ bed has a GVWR of 6950# - Rules do
           not
 apply.

A 14’ open landscape trailer with a single axle will have a GVWR of
          about 3500#.

So a Ford F150 Pickup with 8’ bed, hooked to a single axle 14’ trailer
          –
Rules Apply.

     2.  A Ford F250 Pickup has a GVWR of 9600# - Rules do not apply.

     3.  A Ford F350 Pickup has a GVWR of over 10,000# - Rules apply.

      4.  All of the following have GVWRs over 10,000 pounds:

Chevrolet Silverado 3500, Dodge Ram 3500, 4500, 5500, the Ford
          450, 550, 650, 750, GMC Sierra 3500, GM C4500, C5500, C6500,
          C7500, C8500,
- Rules Apply.

What happens if I don’t comply with the new rules?

For 2011 you will probably only get warnings when your vehicles are stopped for inspections. But you may definitely get stopped. And if a vehicle isn’t in safety compliance it may be placed out of service at the inspection point and may not be moved until it is fixed. Also, if you have serious or numerous violations you could be fined. We have already heard of a truck being stopped for no door markings.
